The program's objective is to improve its connectivity, resiliency, and redundancy around Puerto Rico. Buried fiber being one of the most reliable solutions to Puerto Rico’s exposure to natural threats such as tropical storms and hurricanes, will provide the resiliency needed.
With the efforts led by the PRBP identifying and selecting routes that will greatly impact pre-selected community anchor institutions and other government agencies, we will be able to serve these sites with a much-needed reliable symmetrical gigabit data connection. The new underground fiber routes will increase the hardening infrastructure within the island, especially in the mountains and mostly underserved areas. With the completion of these routes, the island should be able to withstand and minimize the effect of any future weather-related impact, ensuring continuity of the telecommunication infrastructure.

Immediate Items: Generating draft for design RFP
Key Aspects:
1. Buried Fiber Resilience: Buried fiber technology stands out as a highly dependable solution to mitigate Puerto Rico's vulnerability to natural disasters. The program acknowledges that buried fiber offers unparalleled resiliency against tropical storms and hurricanes, ensuring a consistent data connection even during adverse weather events. The choice of buried fiber underscores the commitment to bolstering the island's communication network and ensuring its uninterrupted operation.
2. Community Anchor Institutions and Government Agencies: Under the leadership of the Puerto Rico Broadband Program (PRBP), the initiative focuses on selecting optimal fiber routes that will have a substantial impact of designated community anchor institutions and government agencies. By strategically identifying these routes, the program aims to facilitate reliable symmetrical gigabit data connections to these vital sites. This approach not only improves communication capabilities but also strengthens the overall infrastructure of these institutions.
3. Enhanced Connectivity in Underserved Areas: One of the program's core objectives is to address connectivity disparities in underserved areas, particularly in mountainous regions. By laying new underground fiber routes, the initiative seeks to extend robust connectivity to areas that have traditionally lacked access to dependable communication networks. This expansion is expected to bridge the digital divide and enhance the quality of life for residents in these remote locations.
4. Hardened Infrastructure and Continuity: Through the implementation of new underground fiber routes, the program is dedicated to bolstering Puerto Rico's infrastructure against future weather-related impacts. The completion of these routes is anticipated to significantly enhance the island's ability to withstand and mitigate the effects of adverse weather conditions. This focus on hardening the infrastructure ensures the continuity of telecommunication services, even in the face of challenging circumstances.
